Your Confession is Your Destination

In the beginning God spoke everything into existence, and we are created in the image of God. Our words have the power to create and they have the power to destroy.
What are you confessing into your life? Scripture tells us in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].” Do you say things like “I am so broke I can’t even pay attention” or “my feet are killing me” or “I always catch a cold this time of year”? (This always bothered me, even before I knew the power our words held. I could never figure out why people would chase after a cold or the flu to catch it.) In Mark 11:23 Jesus says, “Truly I tell you , whoever SAYS to this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea! and does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he SAYS will take place, IT WILL be done for him.” In the book of James chapter 3 the Word says “…if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature.” That is why it is so important for us to choose our words carefully; this is also where forgiveness and grace come in. I don’t know about you, but getting control of my mouth is a constant struggle for me; it is also a constant practice. Our words have the power to change our lives. The tongue is compared to the rudder of a ship – a small part, but it determines the direction the large ship will go. Where are your words taking you?
Our words are seeds and when we speak them we plant them and then there is a harvest to be reaped. We need to make sure that it is truly the crop we want to bring in. The words we use say a lot about us. Scripture tells us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. We need to listen to what we say. Our words affect us as much or more than they do anyone else. Our confessions not only go out, they go inward. Changing my confession is what took me from a 2-pack-a-day smoker to a non-smoker of now almost 12 years. We need to be speaking God’s word into our lives and into the lives of others. We need to be speaking life instead of death, health instead of illness, and prosperity instead of poverty. We can change what is on our hearts by filling our Spirit with God’s Word and our changed confession will also change our lives. Something we all need to remember…once you say a thing you can not unsay it. Speak love to one another and carry God’s Word to the world.
